This is NOT a four-star hotel
This hotel is incorrectly advertised as a four-star hotel. It is most certainly not. My husband and I travel A LOT for business and pleasure and this hotel is a solid three-stars. Nothing fancy, no luxuries. No doorman, no parking lot attendant or even anyone to help you when the parking garage ticket machine is out of order (the front desk just repeatedly told us to push a button, but the machine was clearly broken and there was no button to push). Aside from that, this hotel was adequate. It's a no frills, quiet hotel with fairly comfy bedding and free wi-fi. Parking is $24 a night. Also, it's located in a kind of sketchy neighborhood. Lots of pan handlers and fairly far from Old Town and most of Montreal's main attractions. That said, we appreciated the access to the Parc du Mont-Royal, Atwater Market (a must!# and mybicyclette rental #although none were that close; each about a 20-min.walk from the hotel). Hotel du Fort was fine, but we'll look for another hotel closer to Old Town next time.

Convenient location, reasonably priced
Our room set-up included two queen beds, a table that could be used for breakfast, a mini fridge and coffee machine. The bathroom had very little counter space, but there was plenty of room to stow toiletries and make-up in a little corner nook by one of the beds. The furnishings and bathroom were very nice (not ultra-luxurious, but attractive). I appreciated that in addition to shampoo and conditioner, there was bath gel available in the bathroom. Our downtown view was nice, and right on Ste. Catherine's there was a supermarket across the street, a drugstore a block away, an urgent care center a block after that, and both a Starbuck's and Tim Horton's three blocks away, if you just wanted to have coffee and croissant in your room. So everything a family travelling with children or an elder would need, especially in an emergency, is very close at hand. The glitzy downtown mall Eaton Centre was a 20 minute walk away, and along the way you pass by many stores (LaCoste, HMV, Le Chateau, Aldo, etc, etc, etc.# A shopper's paradise. I do have a few quibbles, though: #1# When I checked in, the code for the free wi-fi was written on my key card holder but no one explained what that code was for. I only found out two days later when I told the front desk I could not access the network. #2# No one explained that the garage, which was unattended at night, had an automatic door and after you use your card to get past the gate at level P3 #the only area in the garage hotel guests could use# when you drive up the two levels to the front door it will open when you get within a few inches of it. The garage was very inconvenient. When you approached from the street to get in, you had to use your card to get the door open. But it was difficult to pull in at just the right angle because of street construction blocking off one of the lanes so it took me a couple of tries to get close enough to the card reader. Then once the door flies open, you'd better get your car in fast because the door slams shut again in seconds. The garage is small and cramped and there are just a few choice spots where you will have enough maneuvering room to back out of your space easily #rows of cars too close, concrete beams, walls, narrow spaces# -- full sized cars and SUVs, especially will be a problem. #3# Mom was disappointed that she could not watch FOX News #she complained that CNN was boring) because it was not among the choices of stations that were available on the hotel TV. Aside from the garage, which was a real pain in the you-know-where, overall this hotel provided a good value, especially for the downtown location. I would stay here again.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
The neighborhood included many inexpensive sushi, Thai and Middle Eastern restaurants, as well as a food court that had a bunch of fast food places, like Subway's. If you're on a budget or have kids who are not adventurous diners, you have options.

Excellent Value
The staff was courteous, the size of the room was exceptionally generous. It was also very comfortable! While the space was generally very clean, the bathroom had an unclean odor.

Great location but......
We stayed at this Hotel the weekend of July 13, 2012 and according to the reviews this was a great place. The location is excellent!!! You are in the middle of everything. As far as the hotel the pictures are kind of deceiving. The furniture is a little worn but overall comfortable and I had a microwave, small fridge, and coffee maker. The rooms is clean but there is such a STRONG musty mildew smell that is just awful, and it is on everything; linens, towels, etc. If it weren't for that problem I would definitely recommend this hotel because like I said it was clean. There is free wifi. Also parking for an extra charge. Staff are friendly.

First Rate Hotel
We booked this hotel for our trip to see the Montreal Grand Prix. It was everything they claimed: personalized service, ultra clean and good size rooms. The staff was exemplary. From the time we checked in until we checked out, they greeted us by name and went out of their way to assist us in every way. My only wish was that the hotel's location was a little closer to the center of the city but there are two Metro stations near the hotel which made travel convenient. Next time I visit Montreal, I'm booking back at this hotel.

It is a good choice with a few mentions: 1) the hotel shares the building with a college (la salle) and so the rooms are located floors 10-18. If you are claustrofobic, beware, you have to climb stairs. It is actually not too bad! 2) they charge parking fees of 21$/day Other than that the double beds are kinda small, but doable. The room is big and clean with big bathroom and small kitchenette that can be helpful. the morning buffet is 11$ and is good. Very close to highway (720). For me I would say walking distance from everything ...if walking 20-25 minutes doesn't scare you.

Just what we needed
The hotel is located right on Rue du Fort, which is basically the beginning of the St Catherines shopping district. The room was quiet at night, but still only minutes away from the city's nightlife. 3 Metro stations are within 10 minutes of the hotel. Overall, perfect location! The staff are VERY friendly and helpful! The front desk staff always offered helpful guides, maps and tips for enjoying the city. We chose not to have room cleaning service a few days, but the housekeepers always offered fresh towels when they saw us in the hallway to make sure we were comfortable. The buffet breakfast is nice, but with tax and tip it will cost you about $15 every morning. We enjoyed the buffet a few mornings, but we also bought cereal and milk for a more "budget" breakfast. Oh, and the room has a small fridge and microwave - perfect for storing and re-heating leftovers! It was a lovely stay, thank you Hotel Du Fort!

For longer travels around Montreal, dont take a taxi, take the metro! Taxi trips get expensive. The metro/transit system is super easy to navigate, cheap and a great way to experience the city.
