A beautiful hotel with grand high ceilings and an eccentric historical townhouse charm. Perfectly located right on the shore of Loch Maree, with private lake access. Our room was peaceful and quiet, offering breathtaking views of the lake. The host was exceptionally friendly, warm and accommodating, adding a welcoming atmosphere to both the hotel and its cosy bar. He went out of his way to meet our requests, making us feel truly cared for. Easily our best experience on the NC500.
It was way overpriced, everything felt & appeared run down. On entering the room the bed appeared unmade, the towels were worn out and ripped as soon as used. There was a strong smell of cigarettes through the evening coming in the room. We left the room at 6.30am the next morning because we just had to get out.
One positive which didn't make up for the negatives was the view of the Loch from the room - through filthy windows !

Worth it for the views
Loch Maree was a fabulous location. Staff were helpful breakfast was good. Dining room had limited space. Views were amazing. This hotel needed a few more staff and some updating. It was though quite remote and this would be a challenge. In all though nice place to stay.
The hotel had such charm and I am amazed with the three staff members we chatted with that was keeping up the whole place. This hotel cannot be compared to modern hotels these days; and I wouldn't want to. The Lock Maree has a bar and restaurant on site; which I would highly recommend having dinner and breakfast. The staff was so nice and helpful. We walked the grounds in the afternoon and had such a lovely, quiet, peaceful time at the hotel. Highly recommend and I can't say much more about this place except you have to stay a night or two at least.
We have travelled and stayed in too many hotels to count. There have so far been 2 that have stood out in our minds as giving excellent service. The Loch Maree has jumped to number one. Duncan who welcomed us, was fantastic. He surpassed any previous number ones! He could not do enough to help and make sure that we were comfortable and had all that we needed. When the Callan, came back from his holiday, he again was lovely, helpful and kind, but Duncan had already taken the top spot. The food was very good. We noticed that some people complained about the lack of choice. It is the end of the season and hotels are closing down, so naturally the choice will be a bit less. Each night there was a couple of different choices, from the night before. Had absolutely no complaint about the food, presentation and flavours.
Loved the view. Heating and toilet did not work properly, No signal on TV.
Terrible water pressure. Poor lighting. Sagging mattress on single bed. Hole in wall leading to eaves. Door wouldn't lock. Very poor dining quality. Only one salt and pepper pot between the whole dining room. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
Very old, dated hotel. WAY overpriced. Cold, terrible water pressure and temperature. Room was TINY, bed saggy, pillows hard as a rock. Food was bland and uninteresting. Hotel appeared to have turned off the heat at night to the in-room heaters. Some kind of animal got into the room through the side wall of the bath tub!!
Unfortunately for us the hotel is under recently appointed new management and there is a lot to work on in terms of general hospitality skills and in particular the dining experience . Dinner menu very limited - appear to be aiming for fine dining but i would argue that most NC500 travellers are not looking for this. Service was very slow to the point of embarassing. Breakfast menu was better but cooked food for 1 of us was cold and therefore not eaten .
Fabulous views over loch maree. Stayed during NC500 road trip. Quiant hotel. Waiter service for meals. (Lovely to be waited on)
Water comes from waterfall nearby so water pressure for shower is poor, but ok for a bath. But wouldn’t stop me from returning.
Staff very welcoming and polite.
Excellent attentive and helpful staff, breakfast was high quality and with plenty of choice. The location on the side of the loch with some incredible views was fantastic. However the hotel has some issues, namely limited or no water pressure. This is recognised by the hotel but does mean that showers are a dribble and don’t bother trying to run a bath. We had a great experience Sea Kayaking but got back to the hotel wet and cold unable to shower properly. We stayed in room 6 and the bathroom is in dire need of an upgrade with the floor Lino lifting in places, the radiator thermostat trapped against the wall and a glass shelf missing above the sink. The old thermostat on the radiator in the bedroom was not attached properly and fell off when adjusted. Both rooms were very clean. The other issue for us was dinner. We were not expecting or informed about the menu until we sat down late evening. Very expensive and limited choice. Fine Dining. It was high quality, well presented but not really for us.
Really lovely hotel with cosy lounge with open fire-perfect venue for colder autumn nights. Room was lovely and everywhere seemed freshly painted. Food was good with large portions. Beautiful view and well worth staying for a few days. Very much the Victorian country house hotel.
