Great stay with only very minor negative points. The Pots in the kitchen could be better. Therefore the yard is awesome. Propably the nicest i have seen so far. The house is gorgeous too, but don't expect to much privacy between your party members. The Guest room gets quite warm without A/C but it's ok. Overall a fantastic stay and i will come back as soon as i can afford Hawaii again.
Our family of four had a wonderful stay here. Great house and yard. Kitchen is petite but so well stocked and cared for. The yard is amazing and we loved the stars at night. Various great shoreline accesses across the road to black lava beach Frequented by the green sea turtles.
The eclectic collection of tropical furnishings and the wonderful plantings and layout of the property gave me the intimacy and vibe that I desired. PERFECT
This property came as advertised, maybe even a little better. Clean, full accommodations, comfortable, great yard and perfect location for us. Wanted something away from the touristy resorts without being too remote. The layout is a tad quirky but nothing that we couldn't adapt to. The property management folks reached out to me multiple times and were very helpful. I would definitely use this location again.
A very charming cottage wonderfully situated on Puako Beach Road. There are multiple shoreline access points along Puako Beach Road which lead to great snorkeling - - one is directly across from the cottage. The cottage, which is much larger than indicated by the front view photo, is tastefully decorated and well-equipped, and the large grounds surrounding the property are beautifully maintained.
We really enjoyed our stay and the house was a great fit for our trip. Some highlights include:
1. Super friendly management
2. Great location for our trip
3. Clean house with a well stocked kitchen supplies
4. A/C window units kept the house cool (a bit noisy at night, but nothing beyond a typical window unit would make)
5. Neighborhood was quiet
6. House was stocked with ready to use beach equipment (cooler, chairs, umbrella).
7. Private outdoor shower was a fun experience
From the house we were 5 minutes away from Hapuna Beach, 10 minutes from Ocean Sports snorkeling cruise, 20 minutes from the Airport, and 30 minutes from Kailua-Kona. It is also a few minutes away from the big resorts so if you want to go shopping or go grab a coffee, its a simple drive down the highway.
Tips:
1. Stock-up on your first day. The general store is down the street, but it is really only for grabbing something quick. We found the grocery stores at both resorts just south of the house easy to access and well stocked
2. For large groups, the "napping bed" is the least private space to sleep. Great for naps, but if you have a big group, whoever sleeps in that bed will be in the middle of everything.
3. Outdoor shower is the only shower. Fun for us, but might not be for everyone.
4. Reach out to management if you need anything. They were super helpful our entire stay.
Are you looking for an old school Hawaiian vibe with modern creature comforts? Hale Melemele Is a charming traditional Hawaiian home which has been updated.
The layout is a little bit funky, with a large bed in the main room. It was actually a great place to hang out and read during the day. We chose to sleep in the back room at night. There is a water closet plus a full bath which is convenient when you have a group. The shower is outdoors which we love when we are in the islands. The kitchen is compact but very well equipped. It was spotlessly clean. Also, the web link that is provided when you check in lists the equipment so you know what kind of coffee to buy, etc.
Puako is ideally situated for a visit to the Kohala coast. The mega resorts of Mauna kea, Mauna Lani and the Fairmont orchid are a short drive away. You can visit them to sit on the beach or enjoy the bars and restaurants but you can escape to the peace and quiet of a real neighborhood that is beachfront. Hale Melemele is across the street from the beach. There is a beach access path just a few steps down the street which comes out to a nice little sandy beach. The swimming beach is just a short drive down the road. You can pack up your beach chairs and snorkel gear, which are provided, and spend the day relaxing without ever leaving puako.
Wonderful experience from beginning to end. The house was ideal for a family; well equipped, bright and spacious with a huge and very private yard. The ocean (albeit not a swimming beach) was perhaps 50 meters away and you ALWAYS see multiple sea turtles. The location makes it quiet and private but you are minutes away from the great golf courses, restaurants and shopping. Just a perfect spot to relax and recharge.
Wonderfully prepared home, beautiful/large yard, incredible location across from the ocean, attentive and kind hostâŠwhatâs more to say. Weâre counting the days to our next stay!
Best place we could have picked...perfect in every way! This house provides comfort, privacy and a hawaiian atmosphere. We will absolutely stay here for every visit to Hawaii.
We were in Pauko for 2 weeks with our two teenage daughters. This house was perfect for us. We walked across the street most evenings to watch the sunset on the beach, accessible by a public trail a couple houses down the road. Two fabulous swim beaches are 5-10 minutes driving distance from the house, and we loved the small community up the road (north on the highway) with a great fish market. We got takeout from there several times. The house had very comfortable beds, great linens, and wonderful charm. Outdoor shower was a favorite of all of us. The A/c units were necessary and much appreciated during our stay in June/July. The beautiful backyard is perfect for hanging out and we cooked most meals on the grill at night. We absolutely didnât want to leave.
The Yellow House (hale mele mele, I think) was phenomenal! Completely perfect. Just the right size, super clean, air-conditioned! Right next to several pocket beaches, easy walking distance to several other larger beaches, very charming and quiet. Management was super responsive, and welcoming (we had no issues but they went out of their way to make us feel at home away from home), easy in and out, just AMAZING. I do encourage you to make note of the sleeping/bedroom arrangements, as they MIGHT pose a challenge to non-family travellers (I went with my teenage daughter and my kupuna mom, so we were fine) , and the unique outdoor shower, but we loved it. Would gladly stay there again.
This property was perfect for family of 4 (2 adult âkidsâ). Comfortable, cute, great outdoor spaces, well stocked kitchen. The location is fantastic! Very short drive just down the road to wonderful snorkeling spot and not much longer in the other direction to Hapuna beach.
This beautiful bungalow provided the perfect respite for our family. Across the street from one of the most beautiful views and lava lagoon explorations, all we had to do was walk out our French doors and we were transported.
The lush, beautifully landscaped backyard was where we ate our meals, the big hammock under the palms was where we read our books, the outdoor shower was where we rinsed off the day's adventures.
Truly a lovely home, and we felt so lucky to be able to spend a whole week there. Mahalo to Mary for everything.
Charming cottage with tons of personality. The yard and outdoor spaces are especially nice. We spent several afternoons in the backyard instead of heading to the beach. We hope to return.
The house was clean and comfortable. Great location to Hapuna Beach. Kitchen was well equipped with everything you could possibly need to cook. Grill was clean with an extra tank on the ready. Highly recommend renting bikes from Lat 20 to cruise down the road each morning. Sunsets are amazing across the street with plenty of public beach access paths. We canât wait to come back to this perfect cottage in Puako!
