The hotel/guesthouse is quite some distance from the central parts of Karuizawa. You would definitely need a car if staying here. Whilst newly renovated, the property feels like a poorly designed mixture of English and Japanese concepts that don’t really work well together. I’m confident there are better value for money options in Karuizawa.

Wonderful hotel with a delightful owner and manager. Warm and cozy bar-restaurant with great full-course meals, a nice deck to soak in the sun, and walkable (20 min) to the terrace and forest reserve. Beautiful location in autumn.

Enjoyed our stay with Wellies, truly a rare and delightful gem in Karuizawa. Chris, Judy, and the rest of staff were very kind and a accommodating, the food was excellent, and the vibe of the place was warm and genial. Chris has an excellent music collection that really brightened our day and made us feel nostalgic. Highly recommended!

Easy parking on sight, fresh eggs taken straight from the chickens at the hotel, Chris is an amazing host and cook. My wife and I loved every moment there, we would easily stay again if we go back to Karuizawa.

Hotel Wellies is a great find in Karuizawa! Everything about our stay was outstanding- the room was clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated; the full English breakfast was delicious (kids got to pick the eggs at the chicken coop in the morning); the location was great, close to Hoshino area with onsens; Chris, the owner, was so nice, welcoming and helpful. The inn dog, Freddie, totally won our heart ❤️ I highly recommend Hotel Wellies!!

We stayed for a long weekend at Hotel Wellies and it was exceptional. Chris and Judy made us feel at home from the first moment, and Freddie (the dog) was always around to great us! The food was excellent and served with a lovely view, and as an added bonus we got to help Chris collect the eggs for our full English! Chris was kind enough to give us rides to several places and thus avoid a lot of rain as well. Though the walk from the station is pleasant and not long if you need to do it. Our stay was exceptional and we'll definitely be back to visit Chris and all the staff again. Highly recommended!

Chris, the owner was awesome. We were birdwatching and he took us out in his own car to areas he knew about that he didn't. Super nice person. Breakfast was also great and he made a special additional order of scrambled eggs for my son. He definitely went the extra mile - literally!

Comfortable boutique hotel

I stayed for 2 nights at Hotel Wellies in Dec 2019. Hotel is located few minutes drive from Naka Karuizawa station, pick up and drop off to the station were offered by the hotel. The area is very quiet, perfect for good night sleep. The room’s very spacious (much bigger than average hotel in Japan), super clean and comfortable with the charm of English countryside. You can sit by the fireplace with tea and cookies during snowy winter night, bliss. Delicious breakfast and very filling. Impeccable service from Chris and the team. Chris took me and other guests to see beautiful Christmas lights around the area. He also picked me up when I got stranded. I would definitely recommend Hotel Wellies if you’re staying in Karuizawa.

This hotel is absolutely beautiful. I am an American living in Tokyo and was attracted to this lace because it seemed a little different. Exceeded all expectations! Our room was spacious and beautiful, and the common-room/lounge was warm and welcoming. Breakfast happened to be included in our reservation and it was delicious. After spending the day hiking we were able to unwind with drinks and great conversation with guests and staff. Outstanding service, friendly service. I can go on and on but I already this review is too long.

Hotel Wellies is a winner!

Hotel Wellies is great place to stay. My husband and I spent three nights here in June, 2019 and had a wonderful experience. Chris was a warm, funny, attentive host who made us feel right at home. From the moment we were picked up at the Karuizawa train station, to our check-in with Judy - who is full of smiles and laughs - to our delicious requested vegetarian dinners, we felt very well-cared for. And we can't forget Freddie - the large and gentle poodle that loves his perch in the lobby. The hotel itself is well-situated and offers all the amenities needed for a relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Great hotel close to nature, birding, and food! LOCATION: We spent two nights here in late May. The location is great. The hotel is just a 20-minute walk from the Karuizawa Wild Bird Forest, one of the top birding spots in Japan. We had the forest to ourselves and also saw tons of birds right next to the hotel. The forest itself is next to Harunire Terrace, which has amazing food and shops (try Il Sogno). There is a lovely temple and cemetery down the street from the hotel where we got some great pics. HOTEL: Our room was clean and quiet with a private bathroom. There is also a big deck and garden with flowers, bird boxes, and a feeder. Chris, the owner, was so accomodating and fun to talk to. He picked us up from Karuizawa station and helped us navigate the area. Since this was our first visit to Japan and we only had a few days, it was nice to be able to talk to someone in English. Would definitely stay again!

A stylist British inn in Karuizawa

Staying in the Hotel Wellies is one of the exceptional experiences among my Japan tour. You can have a really British atmosphere at one time but then a beautiful Japanese scenery and cuisine when you walk out of its gate. I would also like to thank Chris, the host of Wellies for giving me an enjoyable British breakfast and telling me lot of tips in touring around Karuizawa. He even took us to a local cafe to have a Jazz night with local musicians. I certainly will come back when I visit Karuizawa in a different season.
