The reason for choosing this hotel was because of breakfast and location--but for different reasons than one can imagine. The breakfast - I think this was the best part of the stay, fairly decent selection--a little bit of everything, but I would not call it a good value for a 4-star hotel. Other 4-star hotels (e.g., in Kyoto, JP, or London, UK.) offered more variety and better quality. The location - I chose it for convenient access to Stazzione Centrale, as I had to fly in and out of Milan' Malpensa airport a couple of times and didn't want to spend > $100 on taxi, so I took a bus conveniently to/from the train station. The added bonus was that we walked to central Milan and were able to keep up w/our daily steps, so yes, added bonus. But the area is as good as it can get close to a train station. The hotel - I don't know why it is a 4-star hotel. I would place is squarely in the 3-star category. Sure, the staff was very friendly and accommodating (except for a breakfast that we could not enjoy because we left very early and they gave us a breakfast bag that we could not eat because mostly everything was sweet, and it was a bummer considering that the breakfast was one of the reasons we stayed there). The property needs a good refurbishing, the hardwood in the rooms was heavily scratched, the paint on the walls was worn out, in some spots peeling off, the bedding was not goose-down (a must for a 4-star hotels, IMO).

Very nice, clean and helpful staff. The hotel provides a lot of little nice touches that make a big difference. Very good breakfast and bar happy hour. I would stay here again without hesitation.

Rooms were good size for Italy, very nice bathroom, and a good amount of space. Very convenient to train station (3 min walk) and a good selection of nearby restaurants. Unfortunately, the osteria recommended by the front desk (Mamma Rossa) was overpriced, overlit, with wines not properly stored, mediocre food, and waiters who tried to guilt guests into adding an additional service charge/tip even though 99% of the places in Italy do not do that.

Our stay began with an unfriendly gentleman at check in. Once completed, we began walking to the lobby elevator and Mr. Unfriendly responded with a sneer that we were in the building across the street. Ummm, why didn’t he tell us at check in? Our friends had Luka at check in and he graciously walked us across the street to our rooms. We spent a couple of evenings in the bar with Danielle and he was awesome! After the second night of our three night stay, the four of us were returning to our rooms and the elevator stopped. We contacted the front desk via a cell phone because the elevator button didn’t work. Luca contacted the elevator company then walked across the street to talk with us while we were stuck. We were finally set free after an hour +. Luca apologized profusely and gave us water and cokes. When we asked how we would be compensated for our horror/inconvenience, we were told that we needed to speak with the manager. The unfriendly desk clerk came by our table in the bar the following evening offering a drink coupon for our trouble with the elevator and we refused it because that wouldn’t make the situation right. Long story short, we never were able to speak with said manager before we checked out. When I emailed questioning a charge and asking about our inconvenience, all I received was a “sorry”. I find it sad that front desk personnel are not empowered to do the right thing when customers experience inconveniences. I do not recommend this hotel!

Great hotel near central train station

I stayed here just one night and I needed a place close to the train station. It was very close to the train station and there’s a laundry facility nearby that I really appreciated it. The hotel staff was excellent. The room was clean. It was on the smaller side, but this is Europe. It’s to be expected and it had everything that I needed. The price was right. Hotel Berna is the perfect location to tour Milan. It is a very pretty and the rooms are spacious with cherry wood flooring. The bathroom is well equipped and spacious also. The best part of staying at Hotel Berna is the wonderful staff and delicious food. The morning buffet has something for every taste, including a juicer with fruits and vegetables. This is a true treasure among the beauty of Milan.
