Completely as advertised. Beautiful, quiet cabin. Well maintained and kitchen has all the necessities. River is beautiful, with the walk back up being some really good exercise. Access roads are partially paved but mostly gravel and dirt, with the bridge that GPS takes you over being a bit sketchy. Heed the owners directions and take the alternate route, which in the spring was fine.
This was a great cabin and was enjoyed by my whole family including 2 grand kids and 2 dogs! There was plenty of room for 5 adults and 2 kids! It was very clean and well stocked with necessities for an enjoyable trip!! Also convenient to Glendale Springs and West Jefferson! The path to the river was very steep but my 74 year old body managed to get there and back!! My grand kids loved it!!
Very nice cabin. Check in and out are very easy. Kitchen could use a few more baking dishes. We could not access the river to kayak. Trip down and up is not good. Not really river accessible as far as our experience went.
This property was great fun. The road is not for the faint of heart. The house was clean and setup well. We had a party of 7 made up of 3 adults and 4 kids. We had fun plenty of room and the ping pong was a huge hit. The hike to the river is tough.
We had a wonderful getaway with our children and fur baby. The home was absolutely beautiful, clean, and spacious! It has everything you need for cooking and preparing meals.
The staff from High Mountain Cabin Rentals are absolutely amazing. Stacey and the office staff are incredibly kind and accommodating.
The fire pit area is beautiful and cozy. The river was the absolute BEST! We were unable to go to River Girl as planned so we did it on our own by the river access. There are lawn chairs and a nice picnic area by the river. We went there multiple times a day. Our GSD pup developed a LOVE for swimming!
I WILL WARN.
I read the reviews about the path to the river access and honestly assumed folks were exaggerating about the difficulty of the path. We learned that they were not exaggerating at all.
There are actually two paths. One is right by the bottom deck. It is narrow. Very steep. But in my opinion, a short cut, because it has rope and markers to help guide you. My husband and I along with our 6,8, and 10 year old could take this trail. FIND THE SWING by the rocks overlooking the river. Absolutely beautiful!
Because I could not hold my 2 & 3 year old on this trail, we had to take the other path by the hammock. It is wide and open but very strenuous and steep. It wore me out!! But the river was totally worth it.
The kids enjoyed the basement area. I enjoyed the laundry room! So helpful for a large family of children. We thank you for your hospitality!
We stayed here for a week and would do it again. The house in an excellent spot on the New River, has an incredible porch, decent cookware, and several good spaces for play and relaxation. The property sits atop a ridge, so getting to the river is a relatively short steep hike. My almost 3 year old did it well, as did my 6 months pregnant sister in-law. The spot on the river has a wide shallow area with only a slight current, where my young kids that can't swim played for hours. It also has deeper spots that made for good fishing and swimming. The property is in good condition and had plenty of space for 3 kids and 4 adults.
The property was very clean and stocked perfectly. We had everything we needed. My only note would be that it really is not very accessible to the river. The hike was truly a hike down the mountain. My siblings and I were perfectly fine but the smaller children and my 69 year old mother were not prepared properly. I loved being able to take my two larger dogs. They had a blast. The side yard was great for them.
We gathered to celebrate 3 birthdays and had a ball. The house afforded the 3 couples to have their own floor. The house was prefect for our group and had plenty of space for us to cook, and eat together. The trek to the river is a little much if you plan to spend time by the river. I hiked it twice a day, but i would not want to carry anything down or back up the trail. The location is perfect for a short trips into West Jefferson, the Southfork of the NewRiver is beautiful.
great location.easy to get to West Jefferson. The path to the river is steep and in need of light repair.elderly are unlikely to be able to get to the river by this path. Children will need help.
House was great with very good living space and kitchen.Great yard for family ( including dogs).
will be back.
Property manager was terrific !!!
The house was wonderful. We came with our kids and another family and their kids. The children really enjoyed fishing and swimming in the river. The basement in the house was great for the kids as well. Highly recommend.
My family enjoyed staying at the Rustic Retreat!
My 87 year old dad was able to move around the main level with no issues.
We could hear the river, which was beautiful!
However, getting to it was too much for our group.
We would stay at the Rustic Retreat again.
We really enjoyed staying at Rustic River Escape. Great quiet location in a beautiful area. House was super clean and well equipped. We really enjoyed it and will be back!
Everyone agreed that this is a great house in a beautiful location. We were lucky to arrive when the river was frozen...a real treat to us Floridians. The trail to the river is steep but all of us, even the grandma in the group, made it down and up safely, and the riverfront area is absolutely beautiful.
The beds were very comfortable and the bedrooms a good size. The kitchen had everything we needed, including crock pots and cookie sheets. It was cold, so we did not sit on the deck, but you will love it in slightly warmer weather. It is large and the furniture looks comfortable, and the view is amazing.
If you are there in the winter, do heed the warnings to have a four wheel drive vehicle. We were very happy on the icy days that we had the traction provided by the 4wd.
Once you are settled in, I highly recommend visiting the New River State Park. It is beautiful and has a nice hiking trail, and picnic tables by the river.
We had an altogether wonderful trip and did not want to come back home.
This property was very clean and provided enough space to spread out. The kitchen provided everything we needed to prepare our Thanksgiving meal. Neighbors, visiting and residents, were very friendly. Furniture in the main living area could use some updating but that is really the only negative we found. Views from the wrap around porch were gorgeous. The trail to the river was strenuous but gave all of us a good workout. Location was convenient to local shopping and trails. Overall our stay was very enjoyable.
My family and I plus our 2 dogs loved this property! It was a peaceful retreat nestled in a beautiful natural environment. The home was spacious and well outfitted for cooking, relaxing, playing games, and enjoying outdoor activities. We highly recommend it!
Our family enjoyed this quiet hideaway. There was lots of room to congregate in two indoor sitting areas, outside porches with furniture, or around the fire pit. We enjoyed our hike down to the river and back. We also spent a day canoeing the river. It was very relaxing.
We were looking for a place to take our four kids to get a quiet weekend away. Convenient to downtown West Jefferson with an excellent, challenging hiking path down to the river.
