We have been to this hotel previously when we rated our stay as excellent. Apparently, there have been some staff changes recently and we found that we didnât enjoy our stay as much as the previous ones. We arrived early only to be met by a charmless member of staff who told us there was no chance that he would check us in before 3pm. We only wanted to leave our bag there until check in time as we were parked a distance from the hotel. To be fair he allowed us to do this. The other service that had deteriorated was the evening meal and the wait we had to be served. The barman gave us menus but never bothered to take our order and took orders from other tables who had arrived after us and we eventually had to go to the bar to place our order. When the food eventually arrived it was not worth the wait. By way of contrast the breakfast was superb so complements to the chef. We feel a little disappointed that the recent changes that have been made have only served to reduce the customer experience and we would probably look elsewhere the next time we are staying in the area.
So upon arrival the hotel had no record of our booking through Hotels.com.
Luckily they had a room available and gave it us for the rate id booked a year ago.
The room was large, nicely decorated. Comfortable bed. Large bathroom.
Breakfast was outstanding delicious.
The staff were lovely.
We had two issues. The toilet wasn't clean, had poo stains from previous guests. And there was no hot water from the shower. Luckily the bath was ok.
It was a nightmare to get to the Red Dragon as the road outside had been closed. Parking was Pay & Display in the Market Square and it isnât cheap!
The Red Dragon is a pub with rooms which have been nicely furnished. The food is very much pub grub and not a great standard. I had a pie which came with a ballooned puff pastry lid straight from the freezer. A little effort with the food and it would be a nice place to stay. The staff were nice worked hard. Breakfast was ok but could be improved. Would I stay there again? Unlikely.
Lovely stay, the staff are so friendly and cannot do enough for you. Location is great right in town centre. Food was excellent. The room was very clean and a good size shower just a shame the water was a bit lukewarm but maybe as it was the furthest room. Would definitely recommend a stay.
I was made to feel welcome as soon as I arrived and all the staff I met were brilliant - nothing was too much trouble. Most importantly, they all appeared to genuinely care that I enjoyed my stay. The breakfast was delicious as well. I wouldn't hesitate to come back. Thank you!
Lovely historical pub and hotel. The manager was the perfect host and nothing was too much trouble, i was their on business and would come out my way to stay their again.
Staff were really lovely. Pub downstairs was good. Room was refitted and some bits were great while other bits appear to have been poorly thought out. We did have some noise from the terrace of the restaurant next door until quite late.
