Location was great for a girls getaway weekend. Beds were so comfy! Unit was clean. Only downfall was the music coming from coffee shop below, but we used sound machines that drowned out the noise. Would absolutely stay here again.
The location is fantastic - close to restaurants, music, etc. The down side is the neighboring businesses. The coffee shop, down stairs, starts playing music at 7:00am and plays the music until 8:00 or 9:00pm. A few storefronts down the street has live music until midnight. If you are comfortable with music until this time, then Gryphon is a good fit for you. The accommodations are comfortable and cozy and are ideal for a UVA, wine tasting, or historical weekend.
Location was great - right on the downtown mall. We walked all over the downtown mall for food and shopping. This is located directly over Mudhouse coffee. The loud music at the coffeehouse starts at about 6:30am and goes until About 11 or midnight. We went down for delicious coffee and ironically, the music seemed much more muted inside the coffee house than in the apartment. The apartment is spacious and it was a great way to spend a weekend with friends. Bathrooms were nice but had some scratches and damage to the walls when we arrived. Beds were comfortable and there were plenty of blankets and towels. Kitchen was very clean. You also need to know that the parking is $12 a day in the Water street parking garage. Other parking is more expensive or difficult to find off
Beautiful apartment on the Mall in Charlottesville VA. Located over top of a cute coffee shop and many shops and restaurants steps away. If you like the smell of coffee you will love it. One of the bedrooms heard the music coming from the shop below but not enough to keep them awake. Would absolutely stay there again.
Perfect location! Very comfortable!
Leaving was a lot easier once we discovered the lot at the bottom of the back stairs. We could pull in to load up and leave. Wish we found it on arrival.
All the doors could use some WD40 to stop them from squeaking. Overall, we loved everything about it!
Loved our stay. Only downside was noise from the coffee shop below. Music started at 6:30 and ran all day-it was actually as loud in the rental unit as the coffee shop!
The property is well located, comfortable and clean. It was very difficult to find, however, as the doorway is in the pedestrian mall where no cars are allowed. There are many homeless people nearby - and even immediately in front of the door to the apartment late one evening. The person did move when we asked. Others were grateful when we shared food with them.
This place couldnât be more perfect - right in the heart of Charlottesville with all the amenities and space you could want. The coffee shop does enjoy some morning music, but the experience was phenomenal.
Iâve never given a rating below 5 stars, but I donât think that it would be fair to not warn potential renters about this place. It did not feel safe.
1. One of the rental managers came into the house unannounced (zero phone call or communication through VRBO) and knocked on the bedroom door of my daughters in their bedroom while they were asleep. He never gave us a heads up that he was going to come over for a repair (we didnât request anything). Imagine a property manager just walking into your VRBO unannounced knocking on your teenage daughtersâ bedroom door.
2. Every city center has a homeless population; itâs part of the city center. But this place has a glass entrance door, and one homeless man urinated on the door one evening (we unfortunately saw it). The solution is to not have a glass door where the homeless can see into us. And it really needs a second door for extra security.
But even with a second door, you arenât safe since the property management team walks in unannounced.
This just isnât a safe property. The good news is that you can lock yourself in the bedrooms at night while you sleep, and we did so that.
We really enjoyed the space and the location is so great, however as others have mentioned before the music from the coffee shop is loud and we wouldnât mind it so much except it starts extremely early. We also experienced a situation where we had to call the police twice because there were homeless people outside being very loud and threatening and the door is made up mostly of glass and we felt unsafe.
The Gryphon is a nice apartment. It was a roomy space considering the location. Two bathrooms is a plus. The first night of our visit was a Saturday and at 6:30 AM on Sunday morning the music from the coffee shop below started LOUD and sustained. It wasn't what I would call mellow coffee shop Norah Jones type music either. Thumping music. The next morning the music wasn't as loud so it may have just been the employees that Sunday morning. We didn't mind the music in the evenings. I gave "Location" a three star only because of the noise downstairs and the homeless community that would congregate outside this popular coffee shop. It's actually a good location as it pertains to the Historic store front mall area. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay.
We loved the aesthetic of the Gryphon! Perfect amount of space for 2 couples in a centralized location right on the downtown mall. We walked to dinner and right downstairs for coffee each morning. Exactly what we needed for our âparents weekend and wine trip!â Would definitely recommend
Do not go to the coffee shop downstairs. They play lousy music that shakes the floor. You really need to crank music in the living room so you donât hear it. You canât hear it in the bedroom, though. Nice place but noisy. We were there at Christmas and heard every Christmas song ever written.
Absolutely loved staying here! Super clean, well decorated and super spacious. The spot was absolutely perfect, we walked up and down Main Street enjoyed the shops and restaurants. The coffee smell in the unit was amazing and Iâm not a coffee drinker! You can hear the music in the coffee shop below as everyone stated itâs not super loud and they play soft jazz- it added to the experience! We will def be back!
The property was in a great location. It was central in downtown mall. Many restaurants and shops. Numerous wineries near.
A flight of stairs takes you to the apartment. There is no elevator. It is located right in the mall and above a coffee shop making the unit noisy. I knew that before I booked but it was louder than I expected. Music from coffee shop woke us up every morning.
The apartment itself is very nice and updated. The beds are very comfortable.
Even though the place was noisy it was the perfect location. I would stay there again but with a white noise maker in my bedroom.
The managers of the unit were very helpful. Checkin and check out was seamless.
Overall a great stay.
The Gryphon was exactly as described online. The location was amazing and ease of access to dining and downtown options couldnât have been better.
The front door has to be unlocked and locked with a physical key each time you come or go which was a little bit of hassle because there is no deadbolt you can just flip when you come in the door. Lots of transients in the downtown mall area at night but we were not bothered.
The amenities were exactly as described and perfectly sufficient for the girls wine weekend we needed.
The property was completely accurate per web-sit. Wonderful condo right in the heart of downtown. Check in was a bit hard (trying to work the lock) but we finally made in it. The stairs are a bit rough when carrying heavy luggage up, all minor though. It is a wonderful VRBO and beautiful condo that is filled with lovely antiques.
