I really enjoy this cottage....it is clearly loved, and has survived since 1905..through earthquakes etc. It has a wonderful history, is totally private..and is like a quaint country cottage, in the middle of the city. It has all the facilities you might need. Plus an outside bath....fabulous!
Great house with neat history. Handy to walk to town.
We were unaware it was only 2 bedrooms with 2 double beds... but worked just fine because the boys had sleeping bags on one bed. Dishwasher was not functioning safely with drawers unable to take weight so we chose to hand wash our dishes.
Apart from that we enjoyed our stay.
Weâve been traveling the South Island for 3 weeks, staying in various Rental homes and hostels, all about equally priced. We are not picky about our lodging. But this house is the only negative experience we had the entire time. Itâs obvious the owners are proud of the history of the home and the artifacts on display. But we just want a comfortable place to stay for a few days, not a museum. First, this home does not sleep 5 as advertised. If they claim your pull out sofa is also a double bed, They have never actually opened it and slept on it. Finally got it opened (needs to be vacuumed under couch). Iâm 5â6 and my legs were hanging 4 inches off the end. There was a huge bump across the middle. My 6â. 0 son slept on the floor all 3 nights. The house had cobwebs all over the place and several spiders. Ceiling fans had a thick layer of dust. It was very cluttered and felt small and cramped for 5 of us. The bathroom is basically in the kitchen and the bathroom door is see-through glass (why?!) so be sure to tell anyone in the house to look away if you are exiting the shower because you will be seen. We were kept awake with stray cats crying and fighting in the yard. Windows donât open, to get fresh air you have to leave a door open, but then you have to deal with stray cats. There was a full size high chair taking up a lot of space in the small dining room. There was no clean sponge to wash dishes and no garbage liners. Drawers had household junk that were useless to us. A purely decorative, uncomfortable large church pew took up hall space. This house just was not a comfortable space. Too cluttered with dusty Knick-knacks to make it a comfortable living space. Itâs not all negative...the WiFi worked well, there were plenty of towels provided, good water pressure and a washer AND dryer were available and the first dish washer weâve seen in 3 weeks was in the house. Also it was inexpensive. But this was the only place we would not recommend out of all the equally priced homes we stayed in in our 3 weeks.
Lovely cottage, perfect location. However, the place is in need of a team of professional cleaners! I spent an hour cleaning on arrival. A discount for a weekly stay would have been appropriate, I think.
In another neighborhood, this home might provide a positive experience. The cottage itself is quaint with an interesting history. It provides all the basics. I would not call this a quiet neighborhood, quite the opposite - so much road noise as it is situated off of a main driving artery. During our Friday & Saturday night stay, you could hear loud car engines revving and loud music from cars racing all night long. Did not sleep well at all. We are not disappointed to be checking out after two restless nights. It does have good proximity to the CBD. My family walked to and from for our sightseeing, though I would not have felt comfortable walking alone in this area. Some kitchen glassware was quite dirty, but overall property was clean enough. Bathroom is challenging. Shower could benefit from a surround and drainage system needs attention. The open shower makes for a very slippery bathroom floor. While we did enjoy Christchurch, we did not enjoy this neighborhood. If I were doing it again, I would choose differently.
This was certainly a place less ordinary. Much care had gone into the decor of this cute inner city house and there was much to appreciate. For us the main challenge was the road noise especially the boy racers on the Friday and Saturday night. Just couldn't sleep despite ear plugs! We also had difficulty getting in through the gate. We arrived around 8.30 in the dark and it took at least 15 minutes for the gate to respond to our attentions. The TV was also a challenge. Perhaps this in many ways, little gem is more suited to the younger, tech savvy age group than retirees like us. A suggestion. Some information on local buses would be helpful for non car travellers.
Private oasis with so much character & comfortable, everything you need.
From initially booking to the end of our stay we were well looked after. James was prompt and thoughtful in making sure we were well accommodated. The house has so much character. Perfect for a grown family of 5 with plenty of room to relax indoors and out.
I really enjoyed staying here. It's a lovely place with a lot of history.
There was a bit of a cold snap while I was in Christchurch and I totally appreciated the heating, which was excellent.
Great central location.
