This hotel came up when I searched for Mt Cook lodging. It is almost 6 hours from Mt Cook by road. We didn’t stay but still had to pay

We stayed at Sunset Motor Lodge while visiting Fox Glacier. The location is excellent — right on the road to Lake Matheson and very close to Fox Glacier Guiding, which was ideal for our early morning trip. There’s also a great view of the mountains from the property, which was a real highlight. The room itself was a good size and the kitchenette had enough plates and cutlery for a short stay. The receptionist was friendly and welcoming. However, as other reviewers have mentioned, the room felt very tired and in need of refurbishment. We had a room with a jacuzzi bath, but it wasn’t particularly inviting to use. The shower pressure was also quite poor. Overall, a convenient base in a beautiful location, but the property would really benefit from an update.

There were no staff on arrival but soon arrived at reception once the bell was rung. Room was clean, only a small fridge but had sufficient cooking and equipment for the hob and microwave to provide a small meal. Highly recommend the walkable eatery Betsey Jane, just down the road.

Wow. The view was just like the picture. Loved it. And so close to everything. Just 5km to Lake Matheson, to the glacier walk start, 1km from the township. Peaceful, affordable. The room was well appointed. Shower lovely. We can’t fault it. Stay here, don’t stay in Franz Joseph.

Amazing views! Great accommodation!! Lovely chickens and rooster that come to say hello in the afternoon. Definitely a better stay than in Franz Joseph. The walks and glacier were better in Fox glacier

The room was spacious with a nice bathroom and kitchen area. What I really appreciated was the small table and chairs outside of the room with gorgeous view of mountains. Motel was within 5-10 minutes of places I wanted to visit as well as village center.

The shower was not great poor stream and at a strange height There was no dedicated air con other than a portable fan which was noisy and there was no flyscreen on the sliding door so could not open it due to mozzies and chickens - yes chickens !

We loved the clean plush bedding and very clean room. The staff were very helpful and the view from the verandah was stunning. We had chickensout the back and we loved them. All over a great place to stay.

This motel was just ok. I was surprised the room wasn’t cleaned daily like most motels, we stayed 5 night and had to ask for fresh towels and more toilet paper. The fridge was set to such a high temperature it froze all our food ruining everything. The bathroom didn’t have a fan, which meant the room fogged up each time we had a shower. I would not stay here again.
