Nice hotel which is a short walk away from the restaurants and shops in the main part of Funchal. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. If you tell the pool staff you are coming back later they will try and keep your spot. Reception will take care of your postcards. Breakfasts were great and so we didn’t need lunch.

We shall return to The Mar

Pros: The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, sea facing rooms and direct access to the sea.
Cons: More sun umbrellas for when it’s really busy.
Location: Close to port for ferry to Porto Santo and CR7 museum. Only 15 minute (mainly flat) walk to the centre of town, 25 mins to the Old Town.
We decided to opt for Hotel Penha da França Mar and we’re so glad we did. It has direct access to the sea, good WiFi, bright airy rooms with balconies and good air con and it doesn’t require an arduous climb up the hill back from town after an evening meal. The hotel is partnered with Quinta da Penha de França accessed across the road using a lift and bridge but this one facing the sea is smaller, with just over thirty rooms, and has everything we needed. Sure, it’s a bit worn around the edges but the staff couldn’t have been friendlier and the service fantastic, especially the two wonderful pool staff and staff in the restaurants. The hotel never felt overly busy, even when it was full during our first few days, as there seems to be plenty of sun beds (though not an equal number of sun umbrellas - not sure what that would mean if it was really busy). The café with terrace overlooking the sea for breakfast (standard buffet fare and perfectly fine) and lunch (à la carte, good and very reasonably priced) was a welcome addition, being able to breakfast and lunch overlooking the sea. The beds were a tad on the hard side but they do offer foam mattress pads to those who need them. The restaurant in the Quinta above the hotel has a lovely outside terrace, we ate there twice - and Joe’s bar has great and very reasonably priced cocktails. We shall definitely be returning.

First visit lived up to the reputation we ex[ected

Pros: Its old fashioned chafm
Cons: Not much
Location: As pensioners we were limited with walking but enjoyed the spacious marina areas
We were recommended to this hotel by a personal friend who had stayed here many times. We were not disappointed and found every thing to be as they described. We were not informed about he exit down at the seafront level through the sister hotel until later in the week when we had been battling with the big hill into the city. The buffet breakfast was excellent and the meals we had in the evening were very good as well There was a quiet atmosphere and it was far from the maddening crowds

lovely hotel, would return,

Pros: everything
Cons: more teapot/coffee pots in the breakfast room. If busy a shortage, an essential for breakfast time . Not fair to constantly ask staff.
Location: Great restaurants, themed bars. They are up the hill a bit so be prepared for a short walk.
great staff, loved the location. spacious bright rooms. Restaurant very good and location unique. 10 minute walk to city centre. Taxi cost approx 4.50 euros

Nice family hotel next to the sea

Lovely garden based hotel with its own pool linked to sister hotel which is next to sea with its own pool with access to the sea. Joe's Bar has fantastic atmosphere without being noisy . 20 mins walk to marina / old town .

A visit to The Quinta da Penha de Franca, Funchal.

Pros: As above.
Cons: More variety in the evening meal 'specials' menu.
Location: Near the sea, sea bathing available if weather permits. Outdoor swimming pool. Access to central Funchal on foot.
We had a very enjoyable stay at the hotel. The staff were friendly and the room was comfortable. Excellent breakfast. We tended to eat out for other meals.

Perfekte Lage um zu Fuss Funchal zu erkunden, oder die Porto Santo Line zu erreichen.
