We stayed at the Reef Playacar for 10 days in March. We have stayed at all-inclusive resorts in the area four times now. When choosing a resort value plays a major role. There are much nicer resorts in the area but you will pay more. So you have to find the sweet spot. The stretch of the Playacar beach is one of the best beaches in Mexico, Pros: Hotel and restaurant workers were very nice. Everything was in good condition. Usually plenty of beach chairs if you got there early. The resort is smaller than the other resorts in the area which is nice. The central area where the units are located has a nice jungle feel. If you stay at the Reef Playacar you will have a good experience and will enjoy your stay. But it could be better, see below. Cons: The entertainment is poor to nonexistent. Whereas other resorts in the area have lots of singing and dancing, they have little. Two nights are discotheque only, one night is karaoke, one night had one singer and another night they had a mariachi band that was good. Very few attend. All the other resorts have much better entertainment. The food is good/OK. They had a pasta bar but the white sauce and tomato sauces lacked flavor. They had fish but it was always a soggy white fish which was just ok. We tried the Italian restaurant and the food was horrible (we came from London and spend time in Italy). The pasta was thick and overdone. My wife would not eat it. The mozzarella cheese was hard and tasteless....

We had the best time at the reef! The staff was lovely, the beach was beautiful, everything was easy and convenient. Our kids loved the pools, swim up bar, and the gulf water. We definitely will be back!

The food options were awesome! We had actual Mexican dishes available to us, and a good variety of others. But we don’t go to Mexico to eat burgers and hotdogs or Italian food, (which they DO have available!) but obviously their native dishes are better. The staff is very kind and attentive always! Very helpful, we felt safe and we absolutely loved our time there!

The resort was great, having a smaller and more personal feel to some of the huge resorts. It was walking distance in the beach right into Playa del Carmen, taking only 15-20 minutes. My focus was a wellness type getaway and the property had great amenities. The yoga classes at the beach in the mornings are worth the early rise. The teacher is great and the class works for all levels. Following up yoga with a coffee on the beach watching the ocean was a great way to start the day. The outdoor Selvatik gym has everything you need. As an avid gym goer, I was able to recreate my commercial gym workouts in these jungle gyms. The food was excellent and even though there are only 2 a la carte options, you can go multiple times as they have a wide selection of menu options. The buffet was also good breakfast, lunch & dinner. The overall environment of the Reef resort is immersive as you are in the jungle and then it opens up into the beach. I will definitely be back.

The property was very nice and clean. Then walking from building to building in the middle of the resort was beautiful, lined with trees, man made waterfalls, and a ton of greenery, but I’ve been to a hand full of all-inclusive hotels and this one was a “tiered all-inclusive”, you can upgrade your bracelet, so you could only get dinner at certain restaurants if you had the upgrade, drinks only if you had the upgrade, or sitting at the beach only if you had the upgrade. I did not enjoy that, I drink beer and the buffets are good for me. As a group of 6, half of us were upgraded and the other half weren’t. So it was hard to plan things. Upgrading the bracelet for room wise was all the same. We had all the same things, except for beer in our fridge, but I could just walk to the bar out of my room and get the same beer. So in my mind the upgrade is a waste of money for me, but maybe some need it was alcohol choice. You never had to fight for pool or beach seating. We always got the same area without having to get up at 3 AM to drop towels. As a blue bracelet, we always got a comfortable cabana to lounge in. All in all, we loved it. You meet the best people.

Get rid of chair claiming and improve food

This place could be great but the vibes are weird. Firstly, I think it’s a horrible experience that people claim the beach chairs for the whole day by placing the towel on them. We had no chair and were at the beach and pool for hours and saw chairs sit empty the whole time. There should be a policy that if the chair is left unattended for more than 30 minutes with no physical belongings than the towel would be removed. Secondly, food is awful. Seriously horrible. Disgusting. We paid $550/night for 2 people. I know that’s not the high end, but c’Mon, do better. I will not return and realizing how it’s so not worth staying at an all inclusive when we could find a regular hotel for half the price and spend our money at the great local restaurants.

Family friendly hotel, great contrasts with their green areas and the hotel. Private beach- the food is good, they do have buffet and only 2 dining restaurants(the Italian restaurant is great) I will recommend to try another one from the city or sister hotel. The option for bookings tours in the agency is not a good service so I recommend to review in advance and have all the questions ready as some of them are priced for what include. Overall great hotel and staff
