Climate was comfortable. We used the wood burning fireplace. We did not have anything for kindling but picked up some newspapers to assist. The compost toilet seemed pretty full. There wasnât any odor but it was just piled pretty high.
Beautiful property and great location. Being solar powered we understood not being able to run air during peak hours but even during non-peak times the air conditioning was ineffective and it was near 100 degrees, very few windows opened so there was little way to get any airflow. I recommend this property just not in extreme temps. Easy to reach owner when we had a problem, overall a great experience.Bed was comfortable and fantastic location.
It was a beautiful setting, and the limitations are what you would expect from an off the grid property. The property was stocked well with the usual amenities.
What a unique stay! Close to town for dinner. Nice setting for the cold plunge pool, and the bed was comfortable. Enjoyed watching the deer while sitting by the fire.
We had a wonderful stay. The cabin had a great relaxing feel and the surroundings made our stay so peaceful. This is a much at stay location when in Spearfish.
This off-grid property was perfect for a weekend visit with my daughter. The off-grid set up of straw bale house, solar panels, well, wood stove was fascinating. The cabin was clean and cozy and Jared was quick to respond when we had a little battery trouble. I will definitely rent again!
My husband found this place and sent me the link and I just booked it without really looking at the pictures. It was different than any other place we have stayed before. It was an experience to stay in a house that is pretty much self-sustaining. The house had plenty of room.
My wife and I stayed for four nights. The location is right in Spearfish but the acerage around the house makes it feel like you are out in the countryside. The house and prperty sre a lot of fun.
We couldn't have chosen a better place for our honeymoon! The house is charming and cozy, and the property is absolutely beautiful!! Located near the walking path and river, it was perfect for our morning walks. We will definitely be staying again.
Property was clean and well kept. The decorations were nice and the outdoor area was fun to walk around. The AC worked OK, just dont run it for too long. It's a very unique place to stay at, and well worth the price.
Loved the unique & artistic, architectural design & flare of this little customized house, located in Spearfish, SD! This was our first time to stay in a âself-sustainingâ property. Definitely one-of-a-kind! Am completely unfamiliar regarding sawdust-composting toilets, but this feature was a very manageable. Truly appreciated the attention to details & the craftsmanship in this space!
This house is nestled in a quiet location adjacent to a small creek & an open field, yet is conveniently located near Spearfish, as well as a short drive to Deadwood or Sturgis. Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse & Custer State Park are also an easy day trip from this location. So, itâs a great place for 2 people to stay! Can highly recommend it!
A very unique property, it was a real treat, staying there. It was also a pleasure meeting the owner and visiting with him. Hopefully sometime in the future, Iâll be able to stay there again.
We loved everything about this home, from its serene surroundings, sustainability and cool factor. One night wasnât enough but we were so happy we got to experience it. We saw a huge buck right outside the bedroom window and loved the thrill of jumping into the cold plunge pool.
When in town, be sure to eat ice cream at Leoneâs!
All instructions were spot on. The address was very easy to find. We meet the owner during the stay. He was very friendly. He made sure we had everything we needed and encouraged us to look around the 3 acre property. On our stay we used the sauna and the cold plunge. I highly recommended both.
My family and I highly recommend staying at the property.
Very peaceful location. House was clean. Has large yard and would be great area to sit outside at night on a summer night. Hosts were attentive and prompt when we requested additional firewood for the wood burning stove. Had four fawns visit one evening. Spent all waking hours sight seeing and visiting attractions. If you have not experienced a self recycling toilet, you may be surprised. But I must say, due to the way the toilet vents there is absolutely no odor. The bed and toilet sit high, so those that are elderly or have physical limitations may find getting in bed or on the toilet a little challenging. None the less, we enjoyed our stay and would stay here again.
My wife and I were out for a visit to see our new grandchild, but our trip was cut short by weather and so I'm offering this review after only one night's stay.
This property is like visiting one of the "wonders of the world". The engineering that went into the design and construction of this property in trying to make it Earth friendly is amazing.
Be ready to step back in time. "Off the Grid" is more than a description; it's a warning. The same concepts that make this property such an endearing and novel stay are the same things that will also require you to remember that there are certain expected (but possibly forgotten) things that will require you to do more than push a button to get it done.
I highly recommend this property, but make good use of your hostess in determining if it's right for you before booking. (She's quite nice and very helpful). It's not for just anyone IMHO.
Cheers!
