Staff doesn’t know how to make a hot chocolate. I had requested three times before I got it right. We have enjoyed better food at other 5 star hotels. Breakfast is not that great.

The arrangement of a birthday cake was a lovely and thoughtful touch that made the occasion feel special. However, I was quite disappointed with the cleanliness of the room - the sofa, kettle, and coffee machine were not properly cleaned, which took away from the overall experience I usually expect from Shangri-La. With better attention to housekeeping, it could have been a perfect stay.

We loved the customer service at the Shangri-La. Our room was understandably not ready when we arrived at 9am but they suggested we freshen up in the gym change room. It was lovely to take a shower and change into a fresh set of clothes after a long flight. Our room became available before noon. The bathroom was quite spacious and the lighting in the room was soft and not harsh. Everyone we spoke to was accomodating and pleasant. Good location close to Circular Quay, the Rocks, and public transportation.

The hotel’s location is wonderful, especially if you like to walk, as I do. My stay - for 6 nights on holiday - was good, but not excellent in any sense except for the location, and views, which are spectacular if you have a harbour-view room or access to their lounge on the 30th floor. Would I stay there again; probably not, but that’s just me. Too many little things irked me, especially in the Horizon lounge, where they need more staff/leadership to make it run to a 5* standard. This is harsh, but true, as it was consistently vexing, albeit only around the edges. The ‘little things’ included sticky tables, dusty light-shades, dirty carpets (from previous guests) fingerprints on cutlery, having to order coffee (there’s no machine) while being ‘overlooked’ by staff, not opening on time but closing sessions on the dot, offering only plain cakes and scones for ‘afternoon tea’, etc., etc. I should say that breakfast was very good for a lounge, as were evening canapés, which most guests genuinely used as a substitute for dinner, so it could be value for money if that’s your bag! The wine selection was good. I recently stayed at a Mandarin Oriental, where everything exceeded expectations; I don’t think this coloured my opinion, but it certainly highlighted the differences in mindset and standards.

Review: The customer service was amazing! The person assisted us was so friendly I hope he sees this, thanks John for making our anniversary delightful. We were upgraded to a deluxe room as we were celebrating our marriage anniversary, which was such a lovely surprise. We also received a complimentary cake and two bottles of Coke. The view from our room was absolutely mesmerising — we enjoyed both the sunset and sunrise with a full 180-degree view of the city harbour and the Opera House. It truly made our stay unforgettable!

Amazing view!

SPECTACULAR VIEW!! I splashed out in a “Grand Premier Harbour View” room which was pricey, but had the most amazing view of the whole of Sydney harbour, the bridge, opera house and beyond. Sitting on the window seat watching the harbour was a continual pleasure, worth the splurge. Room was spacious (more suite), with comfortable bed, sitting area and desk, minibar and coffee machine. Large bathroom (bath and separate shower) with nice toiletries. Large wardrobe and dressing area near door. Fast lifts. Staff helpful and responsive to feedback.
