What you can expect

  • Optimized 6-Hour Addis Ababa City Tour
1: National Museum (Quick History Start)

Start at the National Museum of Ethiopia
The museum became internationally known after the discovery of “Lucy” in 1974 — a 3.2-million-year-old human ancestor fossil found in Ethiopia. Lucy’s remains are kept there and attract visitors from around the world.
Lucy (Dinkinesh), one of the oldest known human ancestors
Focus on the paleo + archaeological sections (skip deeper galleries if short on time)

    Spend ~1 hours max

2: Holy Trinity Cathedral The cathedral was commissioned during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie I. Construction began around 1931, intended as a national church to mark Ethiopia’s modern statehood and religious devotion. However, work was interrupted by the Italian occupation (1936–1941) and later resumed after liberation. The cathedral was completed in the early 1940s (around 1942–1943)

    4: Merkato (Local Life Experience)
One of Africa’s largest open-air market
Mercato was created during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia between 1936 and 1941. The Italians moved local Ethiopian traders from the old city centre to a new area west of Addis Ababa.
The name “Mercato” comes from the Italian word for “market.”
At first, it was a place mainly for Ethiopian and Arab merchants, while Europeans used the nearby Piazza area for shopping.
After Ethiopia regained independence in 1941, Mercato grew quickly and became the heart of trade in Addis Ababa.
Over time, thousands of small shops, street sellers, and warehouses developed there.
    Why Mercato Is Important
    Mercato is famous for:
    Coffee and spice trading
    Traditional Ethiopian clothes
    Gold, metal, and recycling businesses
    Electronics and household goods
Wholesale markets supplying products across Ethiopia

The area also contains historic churches, royal residences, and cultural landmarks that preserve Ethiopia’s rich history and heritage. Today, Entoto is a popular destination for both local and international visitors.
