We had an excellent stay in Castle Gate Guest House for a friend's wedding. The hosts were very accommodating. Check in was so easy and the room was fantastic. Highly recommend for a trip to Alnwick.
2 minutes from Alnwick Playhouse with cinema, cafe and tourist centre information. 5 minutes from Alnwick Gardens & Castle and Barter Books. Plenty of places to eat and shop. Across the road from bus stop coastal route to Berwick on Tweed & Newcastle via coastal towns and villages. 20 mins bus ride away from Alnmouth station with trains to Berwick and Edinburgh. I had a wonderful week there.
Stayed one night for an event in the area.
The property is a little tired, the walls are thin so you can hear people in other rooms.
There is ample parking and the location is great for accessing Alnwick.
We both loved the property. It was home from home and so cosy. The owners were very helpful and nothing was a problem for them. We would stay again in the future đđđ
The property was in the perfect location. Very central within a few minutes walk to the central square, restaurants, bars, theatre, shops. Bus stop right outside with the service covering up & down the coast. It was clean & the bed was very comfortable. Toiletries were provided as were tea and coffee facilities. The host was lovely.
Great location close to all amenities, but being a front room on the main road noise is a problem. The bedroom would benefit from curtains rather than blinds to cut out the street lighting to aid better sleep.
Otherwise the room was good, but the bathroom is tiny.
Host excellent and location perfect. Bedding very clean and comfortable bed. Thin wall between the next room. Caffeine free tea & coffee and sweeteners instead of sugar wouldn't go amiss. Shower cubicle a bit dated but on the whole quite a nice room.
Arrived for a 1-night stay and stayed in Room 4 for 3 adults. We parked directly out front where there is off road parking for 2 cars (please note that the curb is not lowered to access this). Location was quite quiet overnight which I was surprised about! Owners were very friendly and offered advice and leaflets on places to visit! The interior of the room itself was very modern, however my friend noted that the carpets did not look clean and there was a lot of cobwebs. Only downside for me was the insane amount of midges/small flies in the bathroom, both dead and alive, which flew into the main room everytime you opened the bathroom door. The bathroom really let it down, with the shower being on wooden legs but having no cover over the front (not sure if this was where the midges came from) and the latch did not fully close on the bathroom door which meant you were precariously hoping the door didn't fly open when you went to the toilet. Overall for the price it was still a good stay.
The bed was comfortable, and because we were away from the road, there was little traffic noise. However the walls are very thin, and sound could be heard through them.
The bathroom is tiny, and the taps swivel which is a bit annoying.
The host was very friendly and welcoming.
The stay was amazing (we stayed 2 nights)... The room was very spacious, and was well equipped from all aspects. The bathroom was a little packed, but it was manageable (avoid if you plan on spending hours inside the bathroom :D). Jo was very warm and welcoming... We reached very early, and she already had the room ready, so we could check in without waiting.
Deciding factor for me when booking somewhere is reviews and I cannot see why this establishment has such high scores.
Plus factor was location. Within walking distance of everything in the town.
Negatives - It was doubtful on booking if breakfast was provided so I asked for confirmation. Did not get a reply one way or the other so disappointed on arrival to find there was no breakfast (due to Covid). Resolved in that there were breakfast places nearby and at least we did not have to rush in the morning.
Yes, there was parking for two vehicles outside the property but not for an estate car with tow bar because it hung over the pavement and therefore an obstruction. (Owner did point us in the direction of free parking nearby)
The bedroom was snug on space, which we could have coped with had the bed not been short on length and therefore not comfortable for my 6ft 2" partner so he did not sleep well.
Ensuite also cramped but good supply of toiletries.
The room could have been better cleaned, especially in view of Covid. I moved the tissue box which had been cleaned round rather than under and the same could be said of the runners on the bedside tables.
In conclusion was adequate at the time but would not recommend.
