The pictures were beautiful, and the reality was something quite different. This is a quiet neighborhood with good on-street parking. I was very excited when we pulled up. Until I shut the car door and took my first steps in the direction of the unit…From the broken sidewalk to the peeling paint to the hanging baskets of dirt from last year’s annuals to the drapes hanging ominously closed (and in a state of disrepair), my stomach sank.Opened the first door to walk a few steps up to the unit and the stale smell was foreshadowing. Opened the door to the unit, and those beautiful color pics online went practically grayscale. It just FELT dirty. Stale, musty smell. A random projector with wires strewn everywhere (for a projector television?). I moved the projector to reveal crumbs all over the coffee table. The drapes wouldn’t open because they were broken and wedged between the window and the sofa.I got sick to my stomach when I thought about the fact that I’d paid a premium to bring my wife and kids and MIL here over a hotel.The ants in the kitchen and the insane transfer of noise from the residents above found me absolutely stewing for the first 48 hours.Missing tile grout in the kitchen, mismatched paint in the bathroom, a massive built-in microwave sitting atop a buffet that prevented the fridge door from opening completely alongside a dishwasher that still had 3/4 of its blue, protective plastic covering the stainless steel front.I’m out of characters…
