I was immediately struck by the overwhelming stench of cigarette smoke in the lobby. And there was a large warning sign on the building stating it was uninhabitable (with handwriting on the sign saying "the 3rd floor").
I checked in, and when I went to my room (supposedly non-smoking) it smelled so strongly of cigarette smoke that I started coughing. The door frame had visible damage to it, from likely being kicked in - and you could see the light from the outside streaming in the doorframe. There was paper stuck in the lock since it appeared to have been recently broken. Just all around terrible, I instantly realized that if I had no other hotel options, I would prefer to sleep in my car over this room.
The staff was wonderful, and offered me another room but since I didn't feel safe there, and couldn't tolerate the smell, they only charged me for 1 of the 2 nights I had booked.
