Romantic and classy hotel, great location

Really lovely place to stay, we spent 3 nights here. Ideal location for trips around the North Yorkshire and Durham Dales. Great breakfast and evening meals - we ate there every night.

Pleasant but room for improvement

A very nice setting and the castle restaurant was pleasant. Our room was functional but it was quite small and outdated. The bed wasn’t the comfiest and on the small side but overall our stay was nice.

Lovely setting

Lovely, friendly young man on reception when we arrived. Setting is wonderful. Four poster bed great but a little small. Restaurant nice for dinner, staff nice Breakfast far too expensive for what you get. Kept being told only on chef on, waited almost an hour for food that was just ‘ok’. Castle breakfast too small. Good buffet options. Receptionist Saturday morning rather sharp, asked to be refunded for the Sunday breakfast as we were not planning on eating there again. Seemed rather reluctant and offered no apology. The rooms could be so much more in keeping with the castle setting. Current decor bland, lots of empty space and a they’re missing a trick that could make the experience more unique. Bed comfy, sofa comfy. Staff helpful at night and happy to provide extra pillows and blankets. Would stay again, just needs a bit of an update.

Lovely place. Friendly and comfortable.

Stayed just the one night but the staff were so welcoming, friendly and helpful. Comfy beds, lovely linens and everything worked, even if it's a little worn round the edges in some places (well it is an old place after all!) Quiet and peaceful location.

Oh, to nose around all the rooms

Beautiful building and surroundings with interesting explanation of the history. Our room was OK but I wished we had spent the extra money to stay in the castle itself as in the annexe we could have been in any anonymous hotel rather than in a historic monument. It was clean and we had no issues. The service in. the restaurant was good and breakfast was excellent. We would definitely stay again but upgrade to the main castle
