I’m Dan, a US Navy sailor currently on emergency leave because my mother was in critical condition at Maine Medical Center. My parents were on vacation at the time and we have no family in the area, so we had been hopping from place to place as her prognosis develops. My wife booked this property to give us a place to live for a little while. We have an evolving group of people with us as people fly in and out to support my mom. We asked if they would waive their max occupancy, to which they cordially agreed. On arrival, we found that the property was more cramped than we had expected, but decided to stay considering the circumstances. The place was hot from the summer heat so we turned on the A/Cs. After a few minutes, the increased power draw blew a fuse. Based on the property’s outdated electrical, we expected this was likely to happen again and notified the property owner of our intention to find other accommodations. We requested a partial refund, offering to pay for the first night. Unwilling to compromise, they told us they were sending a handyman to replace the fuse and would not refund us. We filed with Vrbo, only to be told we were welcome to return to the property. The prorated refund would have been around $5k. You return home from 6 months of deployment in the Middle East because your mother is dying and the first group of people you do business with immediately steal $5k out of your pocket! Wish I was making this up, honestly just sad.
