The administrative region of Primorsko oranska, better known as the Kvarner region, is one of the areas with the longest tourist tradition in Croatia.

Its beginnings date back to the middle of the XIX century ...., when this area was a favourite winter holiday resort of the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy. Nowadays, the Kvarner islands of Krk, Cres, Rab and Losinj as well as the coastal towns, especially Opatija and Lovran, with their numerous hotels, holiday resorts and apartment complexes, have become popular holiday destinations.

This region consists of three different but equally attractive units. The first is the "Primorje", which stretches from the "Liburnijskla Rivijera" below the "Ucka" mountain range along the coast to Senj. Furthermore, the islands of the Kvarner region consisting of four of the largest Adriatic islands - Krk, Cres, Losinj and Rab. The third region is the "Gorski Kotar", also known as "Croatian Switzerland". The centre of the region is the former main port of the Austrian monarchy, Rijeka. Today Rijeka is the economic and administrative centre of the region and is rich in architectural heritage from times gone by. It has a lively city centre with many cafés and various shopping centres. Once you are in the Kvarner region you should not miss to visit this city.
