On first glance, the property seemed as advertised. From there things went downhill quickly. The porch had splinters and loose unsafe floor boards, several doorknobs fell off when turned, and dirty dishes were found in the cabinets. Worst of all, the air conditioning unit upstairs was not working and it was 89 degrees. We originally thought the thermostat just needed to be adjusted and did that, headed out to the beach and several hours later it was no cooler. We reached out to our host who told us she already knew and had someone coming to look at it. This was Sunday night at 7 pm. We explained the urgency as we had a newborn and two elderly people with our party, but she just told us she would keep us updated. We eventually spoke with an assistant who told us the earliest possible the ac unit would be serviced was the next morning. After much negotiation, she agreed that she and we would look for another property for us. We found another property (the only one on the island that could accommodate our party of 10) and called her back to notify her. She agreed to cancel our VRBO listing and also venmo us the cost differential for the new property. We called VRBO customer support and they reimbursed us for the canceled VRBO property, but then the host and assistant both refused to pay us the cost differential. They should have notified us as soon as they knew there was a problem with the AC unit and kept their promise of reimbursement. Very disappointed.
