The staff are super friendly and very accommodating. At first glance I was a little concerned by the appearance, and you might be too, but, don't let the reception decor and hallway carpet fool you. The room was very clean, the bed was extremely comfortable and the bathroom was in excellent condition. I highly enjoyed my stay and would book again.

The Hotel is in a fantastic location downtown in a nice part of the neighbourhood. The rooms could do with an upgrade. The aircon unit is so loud each night that it wakes you up when it starts up. It's beyond silly. The rooms could do with modernising and the walls are thin. The staff were great, the bed was comfortable enough

Can’t beat the price and the location

The hotel is located right in the heart of Santa Monica so super convenient. It is a bit dated but still comfortable. No air in the rooms and you can’t really keep your window open due to loud noises and screaming at night by the unhoused. The shower needed some help and the tv didn’t work, but all that said you can’t beat the price and the location!

The hotel is great, comfy beds, clean linens, hotel is old (built in the 1920's) so walls are paper thin and floors/stairs creak, but does the job! The area, however, is less to be desired. Vagrants all over the area, I wouldn't feel so safe walking around at night, and they are loud at night as well, so don't bank on getting much sleep before 2am. But that is out of the hotels hands, we were happy with our room!

This boutique hotel was very charming and comfortable. In a perfect location, walking distance to many restaurants and attractions. We easily walked to the pier, Palisades Park, the Third Street Promenade etc. Felt very safe here and the town is really cute.

Friendly hotel, is a little dated but clean and rooms have good amenities. The staff very friendly and attentive, I would say excellent unlike other reviews read. The hotel is ideal as base to visit Santa Monica downtown and pier and felt very safe. The downside was one night there was a party in a neighbouring establishment which made sleeping difficult. I would however recommend the hotel as a great place to stay.

Historic hotel at a great location.

We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Carmel. The location is great, the service was friendly, the room was clean and comfortable, and it was inexpensive for the area. The thing to remember is that this is a historic hotel, built in 1928 and family owned since the 1940s. When staying at this hotel, you have to keep that fact in mind when setting your expectations. Much of the original hotel is still there, and it has the look and feel of an old hotel. Nothing felt dirty, but things felt dated. It had the feel of an older beach hotel, which it sort of is (based on its location). Noise was not an issue for our stay, but we also slept with a white noise machine we brought, so your results may vary. I'm glad this hotel is there, and I would stay there again. There are plenty of new, luxury hotels a block away, but they are double or triple the price. The owners could spend a fortunate renovating the place, but then it would cost more; plus, there is very little historic L.A. left. It's nice that a piece of it, even with its flaws, is still around and at a good price.
