The property was very clean and had many extra touches. However, our weekend getaway was impacted by loss of electricity. The house is on a very busy road with semis driving 55mph. The noise couldn’t be heard inside but it was loud outside when sitting on the beautiful deck. During our stay, the power was out for several hours. Without air conditioning, lights, television, or the ability to flush toilets, we were forced to alter our plans substantially. We noticed a strong sewage-like odor coming from the bathroom sink and shower, which made it very difficult to sleep in the adjacent bedroom. The smellWhen we brought this to the owner’s attention, we were told that odors might occur due to barometric pressure changes.From our own research and understanding, a power outage can indeed cause septic systems to malfunction. Loss of power disrupts waste processing, potentially leading to wastewater backup and foul odors inside the home. Given that the power outage and the odor occurred simultaneously, it’s likely these issues were related.Telling a guest that we should have gotten travel insurance is not the answer. Maybe invest in a generator.
