Base Camp is a hidden gem. If you are lucky enough to find it available and have a sense of adventure this is the spot for you. Tom is an incredible host and truly cares that his guests enjoy themselves. The frisbee golf course is world renowned and kayaking the Colorado river is a blast. Perhaps the best part though is the endless wandering and exploration. See that peak over there? Letâs climb it. You could easily spend a week here enjoying the beauty of creation. Cannot recommend more and looking forward to returning.
Best VRBO I have ever stayed. We were there as a family in May. The pictures donât do it justice. Everything was perfect, the host was amazing and the whole experience was flawless. House has everything you need. Itâs so gorgeous and private no need to wait in line for the other parks. Book this now. I canât wait to come back.
Tom is a great host! The main house was clean and the view of the river was perfect. We kayaked, hiked and used the UTV for a day of exploration. Short walk to the "beach" along the river and it was great to hang out.
First off, Tom is an amazing host! He is very responsive from the first minute I rented the main house all the way to checkout. Anything we needed he accommodated. The house was perfect in every way! It was so unique, beautiful, and all around perfect. Not to mention the amazing 2 disk golf courses!! It was a perfect trip and I highly recommend rented the main house if you plan on staying!
If you want to be off the grid, this is the place! The drive was manageable and exciting, but donât do it in a vehicle without decent ground clearance. A Tesla likely wonât be the same if you go that route. They were grading the road while we were there and it got a lot better. We did the drive to town and back every day and it did get a little tedious, so in the future Iâd plan to limit trips to town and base more out of the property. That was just poor planning on my behalf. Property was excellent and very comfortable. Tom and Teresa were awesome. Kobae and Jax cracked us up. Wish we had more time to sit and visit. Next time!
The base camp was a wonderful getaway. We were looking for a relaxing break from our day to day routine and we certainly found it. The location and property were spectacular. Hiking from the property was great and renting a side by side was the way to go. There were amazing views in every direction. Tom was always a phone call away and created a true canyon experience including even nightly wildlife sightings. Our entire family enjoyed our stay (Myself, Husband & 4 boys 9 - 16). One note regarding the drive to the house that others have mentioned. If you are not experienced in canyon, or rock/cliff driving and have a fear of heights you may need assistance reaching the house. It is a much easier drive to reach the house in a side-by-side, than with a regular sized vehicle.
Perfect location for those who like to do some âoff roadâ driving.
If youâre not a fan of heights and maneuvering over a few rough spots and turns, this might not be the place for you.
The main house has beautiful porches and views! The house has all necessary basics.
We stayed in April and it was chilly a few mornings, so we made use of the fireplace and generous stack of wood.
It was a bit windy and dusty when we were there. The only change Iâd make would be choosing the other 2 bedroom place for less wind.
Lots of room to explore on foot or ATVs.
And saw several groups of people playing the amazing frisbee golf course!
Our family of four (two kids - 8 and 6) stayed here for two nights at the end of our weeklong tour of the "Big Five." We could not have asked for a more incredible experience. The property is unlike anywhere we've ever lodged (in the best way possible) and we stayed busy with an ATV ride to Chicken Corners and the Wind Caves, a dip in the Colorado, and endless stargazing! Colin (and Ranger) were fantastic guides and the giant tortoise was icing on the cake. The drive in is a bit harrowing for novices like us but completely doable. Don't let it deter you from an unforgettable experience. We may never be able top Spring Break 2022!
Getting there is half the fun. Don't be intimidated by the drive, BUT, have a high wheel base makes it easier. Thanks to Tom for always being a great host. Ted
Our family of four including 2 teens enjoyed our stay at the Last Hurrah house. The 2 dogs had a blast too. Lots of mountain biking, hiking, and kayaking right outside our doorstep with amazing panoramic views. We also brought our own paddleboards. It was so fun to see all the critters (skunks, raccoons, and foxes) at the night feeding and Toms' big tortoise. As everyone mentions the road is no joke. Only attempt it during daylight with good clearance (over 5-6 inches), and if you are comfortable driving this sort of road (my husband is, but I am not). We made the rookie mistake of driving in with a low-hanging rear bike rack which got really beat up. We took it off for the drive out and stuffed the bikes in the car, this was much smoother and less daunting.

Amazing...and daunting
What Tom if offering here is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. The remote setting and scenery are amazing. But what really took our breath away was the drive over Hurrah Pass. Because Tom has lived here so long and drives over the pass regularly, he downplays how rugged the journey actually is. I made the trip with my family in a rented SUV at dusk, and it was daunting. I wish the listing had encouraged me to rent a jeep in Moab and have fun with this road rather than worrying about damages to my rental car for much of the way. I will say that the journey back over the pass when we left felt easier since it was done in the morning and we'd grown somewhat used to the jagged path and terrifying drop-offs. Tom is preserving something incredibly special and is going to great lengths to bring supplies to this remote area. So, hats off to him even if the home we rented had floors that needed a good scrub and bed coverings that were not fresh (we washed them after arriving). The landscape and the feeling of this place are something we will never forget. Tom and his crew clearly work hard to make all this possible, and the pros far outweigh the cons.
This is one of the coolest places you could ever stay! We had such a great time and have never stayed anywhere like this. We had all the plans of what we were going to do in Moab, but we just decided to stay on the property and explore. Tom and Kobe were fantastic. Our nine your old daughter had a terrific time. Our dogs lost their minds. I don't think we can go to Moab again without staying there. Don't pass this up! Hope for a cool storm. Our two wheel drive Kia made it fine.
Everything was as stated in the listing. The views around the cabin were more impressive than I expected and the cabin had more amenities than I expected with it being "off-grid". Tom was great. If only staying two or three days then I recommend taking everything you need with you so you don't have to drive over the pass back to town. This place was a great experience!!!!
One of the most scenic places in the country. We rode motorcycles from NC to here and made the trek of Hoorah Pass. Beautiful scenery everywhere you looked and always something to do or see. We rented a side by side in town and went even deeper into Moab.
Our Host was great and even helped us bring one of the broke down bikes back over the pass.
Highly recommended.
This property is rustic and not fancy at all but it has so much going for it, itâs worth forgoing the fluffy white towels and pristine housekeeping. It takes an hour of bumping along a very rough and dusty to get there and you must have a vehicle with good clearance and ideally 4wheel drive, otherwise you wonât make it. The owner is very helpful and good natured guy with a few good stories to tell. Kayaks and off road vehicles are on the property as well as many hikes and the best views you could ask for. Star gazing with a drink is a perfect way to end a day here
we loved our stay , being all the comforts you need and make sure you are careful driving in , road was not as bad as other folks had mentioned . we had a not modified toyota 4 runner and had no issues . hosts were helpful and the location , quiet, stars , privacy was the highlight . thank you Tom and Linney for sharing your land and stories and home with us . Itâs a special place for those who are looking for a real escape from the rest of the world we regularly inhabit . i would return .
Once in a Lifetime experience and views. Very unique property and stay. If you're not comfortable off roading this might not be your stay but if you're all about getting away from everyone and being in nature this is the place.
If you are looking for absolute desolation and privacy this is a good choice. The views are similar to the national parks nearby just without the big crowds. Sunrise and sunset are absolutely gorgeous here. The house is comfortable and boasts views of a small pond in front, and the Colorado river. The home is fully equipped with everything you may need including a washer, dryer, dishwasher, full kitchen, grill, wifi and satellite tv.
