We had stayed at Rebak Island Resort about 10 years ago when it was managed by Taj, and returned for a 5-day stay this time. The natural setting is still beautiful and the private beach remains a highlight, but the property feels dated and service is not at the same level of consistency or polish that we experienced during the Taj era.
Positives:
• The private beach is stunning, with especially beautiful views from the sea view rooms.
• Convenient ferry transfers to Cenang Beach gave us easy access to a wide variety of restaurants and bars.
• Breakfast was decent, with a fair selection (though weaker on Indian options compared to the Taj days).
• Kayaking was easy to book directly through the hotel and turned out to be an enjoyable activity.
Negatives:
• The property feels dated, with worn fixtures, limited plug points (only one US-friendly), and a poorly maintained bathroom. The water heater also ran excessively hot, to the point of being a potential hazard.
• Service was inconsistent. Some staff, such as those at breakfast and room service, were very attentive, while others, particularly at the pool bar and Indian food station, were disengaged.
• Dinner at the hotel’s à la carte restaurant was underwhelming, which led us to dine in Cenang for the rest of our stay.
Overall, still 4/5 because we value the private beach the most, and the remaining annoyances are things we can live with.
