It feels more like a half-way house than it does a Hostellerie. It's too hot in the main room and the old man running the place kept turning off the air conditioner and complaining to the guests about a door not being closed, he was being aggresive about it to people who had nothing to do with the door, I think he expected the guests to keep shutting the door, or something, he was a bit much and clearly hates his job. I could hear him complaining about the guests and owner, he seems over it, like he was quiting or something, he made me feel like I wasn't welcome, or I was a nusance instead of a guest.. The beds are terrible, the bedding is old and gross, but the bathrooms were clean and there were a lot of them. I liked the people staying there, they were nice, and the woman working the reception the next day, with the accent, was super nice and helpful. The balcony was torn up and being repaired and the front entrance was being painted (fumes) so it was a bit much. I liked that it had a kitchen, but it was so hot in there that I just stayed out, and I'm not sure why there is a lock on the dishwasher? Super weird! lol

Bang for your buck. The room door and window are frosted glass so you can see the outlines of people passing by. Walls are thin so you hear a lot including that one person walking by at 4am. It was tricky figuring how the door keypad lock works cause it doesn't automatically lock behind you nor did it have an actual lock button. You gotta lock it from the inside before you leave the room. Otherwise though, we slept well. Room wasn't uncomfortable. There's nowhere to hang and put your clean towel and clothes in the bathroom or a place for your soaps other than the floor. On the upside the bathroom was pretty clean. It can feel a little dodgy outside at night but we didn't feel unsafe. They don't open the door past 10pm so you gotta pay a deposit for a doorpass and they refund it when you return the key. Didn't use the other amenities. No conflict with other people but we stayed one night and it was just a place to sleep. Would I stay again? Probably. Not alone though.

People in the community say that the Parkdale Hostilerie has gone downhill due to new ownership. This is not true; owner is busy with Shisha Lounge and Soir. She has left the self-described "maintenance man" to "manage" the place. Customer service is awful. Cleaners do not clean. Rooms are infested with Toronto residents who lack basic manners and decency. Having travelled throughout the world, in 5 star hotels and budget hostels, I can state unequivocally that this is the worst place I have ever stayed. If you don't believe me, check the other reviews. There is no manager here. The customer service is awful. I have decided not to live in Toronto, in part, because of the terrible service that was provided here. Please do better.

I really like this hostel for its home-like feel with its vintage and assorted furnishings. Large screened TV to watch movies, etc. Living area is spacious with 3 comfortable couches and 3 dining tables, framed pictures, shelves with books. Lots of room to move around. The rooms are spacious and include lamps. I like that you can use any shower and toilet that's available near the kichen area and don't have to wait in line for the one that's in your dorm area. Lots of sinks are available in the open areas of some dorms where you can wash up if you don't need privacy. Some newly updated shower/bathrooms. Everywhere is kept cleaned well. Kitchen is well stocked with a variety of ceramic dishes, pots, pans, etc. Updated appliances. 2 huge fridges, both with freezers, a dishwasher, lots of counter space. There are 3 huge decks on different levels and one smaller enclosed deck, so tons of outdoor space. It feels like a cottage in the city. It's an old building but it's kept in good, solid condition. The staff are easy to work with and are good-natured. The area has some gorgeous old homes and is near the lake with its walking and bike paths. The carpeting leading up the stairs is somewhat worn and entrance walls could use a paint job, as it's heavily trafficked with luggage scruff marks.
