Less ‘eco-chic retreat’ and more ‘eco-shock reality check
What we thought would be a hidden jungle gem turned into a seven-hour headache of escalations with Expedia and a property that simply wasn’t ready for prime time. Power outages in 95-degree Riviera Maya heat left us with no A/C, no fridge, and spoiled food — a nightmare when traveling with a one-year-old. The property did have a backup generator, but the staff admitted it was only for lights and water, not comfort, because ‘it costs too much to run.’ That’s not just poor planning, that’s a health and safety hazard.
Expedia compounded the issue by dragging their feet, refusing to honor the VIP badge guarantee, and offering little beyond scripted apologies and a refund runaround. In the end, no platinum perks, no real solutions, and a week later I was still chasing my deposit. The staff on-site was polite but overwhelmed, the A/C units underpowered, the so-called private plunge pool laughably small, and parking unsecured. What you get is essentially a basic apartment block with a nice paint job and a pool in the middle — not a VIP-worthy stay.
