Pull off the road and into the trees, and the rest of the day starts to fall away. Orion sits on its own private site at Alderwood Crossing, a wooded retreat just outside Wilson in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The cottage is set about a hundred feet from its nearest neighbor, with privacy screens framing a view that opens straight out into the forest, so the space feels like it's yours alone.



Inside, a queen bed is made up and waiting, with a sofa to stretch out on, soft lighting strung overhead, and blackout shades you can draw when you're ready to sleep in. Solar power keeps your devices charged and a ceiling fan keeps things comfortable on warm afternoons. There's a coffee maker for slow mornings and a heater for the cool nights the U.P. is known for. It's simple, comfortable, and built for actually unwinding.



Step outside and the site is set up for the parts of camping people love without the parts they don't. You've got your own fire ring with firewood and a grill grate, a picnic table, and a couple of chairs for sitting out as the fire burns down. A private outdoor restroom and a solar shower mean you never have to leave your site, and everything is cleaned and ready before you arrive.



The real draw comes after dark. With almost no light pollution out here, the night sky over Alderwood is the kind most people forget exists, full of stars and worth staying up for. Days are for exploring the western U.P.: agate hunting along the Lake Michigan shoreline, kayaking and waterfalls within easy reach, and small-town Michigan in every direction. Island Resort and Casino, with dining and golf, is about three miles away, and Escanaba and Little Bay de Noc are roughly 16 miles northeast.



Orion is ideal for a couple after a quiet getaway or a solo traveler looking for real stillness. Families are welcome too, and you're welcome to set up a tent on your site for the kids. Book one cottage, or gather friends and reserve more than one, and let the woods do the rest.
