Valle del Cauca is known across the country for its rich culinary heritage, with specialities such as Tamal Valluno, Pandebono, Viche, Manjar and exotic fruit juices like Borojó. On this cultural walk through the Mercado de la Alameda, your local guide will show you the market's history, its vendors and its role in the everyday life of the city, so you can understand how central our identity is to our gastronomy.
Between Afro preparations and European influences, you'll get a glimpse of local culture and way of life. The market is home to hundreds of vendors selling everything from fresh produce to clothing, crafts, and household items.
Along the way, you'll pass the stalls where caleñas prepare traditional dishes such as Champús and Cucas. Tasting food and drinks is completely optional and not required to enjoy the tour: if you decide to try something, you pay directly for what you choose, and there is no obligation to purchase anything.
This experience brings you closer to the flavours, colours, textures and traditions of the region, which are loaded with symbols and meanings, revealing social relations, popular imaginaries and the use of the environment.
We will talk about:
History and origins of our regional gastronomy
Cultural influences of local communities
Unique and useful preparations
Ancestral ingredients and traditional techniques of the region
The food market as the nucleus of economic survival
Biological, geographic and cultural diversity of Valle del Cauca
And much more!
Join this experience with our team of local guides and discover the culture and daily life of the market inherited from our families. You'll also get recommendations for local spots to have lunch, buy coffee or souvenirs, in case you'd like to return on your own!
