Overview

There’s an old Castilian saying that goes, “With bread and wine you walk the road.” On this tour we’ll have the road (to Santiago), the wine (white, sparkling, delicious) and something a little better than bread: grilled fish. We’ll head to the most adorable fishing villages in Gipuzkoa as they did in the Middle Ages, traipse through them, learn their secrets and their most illustrious offspring. Yeah!

Ermita de San Telmo

Zumaia is one of the main entrances to the UNESCO geopark. It’s a perfect place to admire incredible, vertical rock strata cutting into the ocean. We’ll stop next to the picturesque San Telmo chapel located right on the edge of a cliff and talk about flysch and karst. The experience wouldn’t be complete without trekking to the lookout located on the very tip of the cliff - take a deep breath and follow the guide!

From the seaside we take a short drive to the beginning of our trail that forms a part of St. James pilgrimage. It’s a beautiful, 2 hour walk through hills covered with Txakoli vineyards and ‘bodegas’. You will learn about the history of the region and also have a chance to observe the traditional way this refreshing, white wine is grown. Wine landscape & the blue ocean horizon - pure pleasure.

Next stop, Getaria - true Txakoli heaven! Getaria is one of four Txakoli wine regions and also the most renowned one. We chose a small, sustainable winery to embrace the traditional methods of wine making. You will dive in the world of ‘txakoli’ making process, Hondarribi Zuri and Beltza grapes and learn how to serve and pair it. Enough talking - time to try this bubbly, crisp drink!

Lunch time! Getaria is home to some of the best seafood restaurants in the region and you’ll have an opportunity to try its speciality: charcoal grilled fish and local wine. Monte Igueldo (Pass by)
It’s time to go back. We will leave Getaria behind and follow the coastal way to Zarautz and Orio from where we will drive up Mount Igueldo. During this scenic ride we will pass green fields, farmhouses and admire incredible views of the ocean.
