What you can expect
The Scottish Highlands & North Coast Road Trip Guidebook is a connected multi-day journey through one of Europe’s last truly wild landscapes — where deep glens, sea cliffs, white beaches and ancient mountains unfold in powerful sequence.
Inspired by the regions made famous by the North Coast 500, this guide presents a broader and more flexible Highland journey — focusing on landscapes, pacing and experience rather than simply following a signposted loop.
Covering the far north of Scotland, the route is best enjoyed over 7–14 days — with flexibility to shape it across 3–10+ days or longer. Distances are significant and roads are often slow and dramatic, making structure and pacing essential.
Rather than separating coast and Highlands, this guidebook follows a coherent circular progression:
1) Inverness & the Great Glen
The gateway to the Highlands, including Loch Ness, forested glens and the natural starting rhythm of the north.
2) The Far Northeast — Caithness & John O’Groats
Big skies, fishing harbours and long North Sea horizons, where Scotland feels expansive and elemental.
3) The North Coast — Sutherland’s Atlantic Edge
Empty beaches, limestone cliffs and sweeping coastal roads between Durness and Tongue.
4) The Northwest Highlands — Assynt, Torridon & Applecross
Isolated mountains, sea lochs and some of Britain’s most dramatic driving, including the Bealach na Bà and the road to Applecross.
Optional Extension: Orkney
A prehistoric island world of standing stones, sea cliffs and vast northern light.
Each section includes:
• Scene-setting introductions that connect the journey
• Clear route progression between destinations
• Time-based guidance (what fits into 1 day, 2–3 days or longer)
• Pacing advice to suit 3–10+ day trips
• Overnight stay suggestions and base options
Pre-planned point-to-point route guidance helps you understand how the Highlands fit together without overwhelming you with unnecessary options.
This is a self-guided road-trip guidebook — not a tour and not a navigation tool. It provides the structure and insight so you can plan confidently while keeping full flexibility.
Follow the full circular journey or adapt sections to suit your timeframe. The framework is done for you; the experience remains your own.
With 12 months of access included, please choose a booking date that allows time to plan before your trip, as access begins from the date selected at checkout.
