Very friendly and helpful staff, cleaning was excellent as was the food at breakfast. The buffet at night is something you either live or not, I’m not a fan so chose to use the dine around option to eat at the Portuguese and Italian restaurants - both excellent The location of the hotel is also superb and the views breathtaking from the room. Ron

Good, but not 5*

This is a very impressive hotel building but is a 20 min walk from the centre of Funchal and if you take the pleasant walk into town will involve a steep hill on the initial 400 meters return journey. The hotel's reception and public rooms are very comfortable - in a minimalistic style - and the staff are generally friendly and helpful. However, the rooms are slightly dated with signs of wear & tear in the bathroom. All the rooms however face the sea and those on higher floors have exceptional views. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and there are 3 large seawater swimming pools built on a huge sea platform. The hotel also has a health spa, gym and indoor pool with facilities for kids. We were however disappointed with the quality of food in the main buffet (Oceans Restaurant). Much of the food appeared to be recycled from meal to meal, the restaurant often seemed overcrowded and at times resembled a bun fight. For those on HB there is the Dine Around option which allows you to eat - with prior reservation - in the 3 speciality restaurants which are Japanese (sushi), Italian & Portugese. We tried all three and in our opinion the Italian (Mamma Mia) was the best by far. The hotel is in the tourist area , Monumental Lido, which is fairly quiet although there are a number of small bars nearby including the Hole in One pub situated right opposite the hotel and is very lively with music every night. Whilst the Vidamar is a very nice hotel with good service it does not quite come up to it's 5* rating.

Definitely NOT 5*.

Although the hotel is well located with all the amenities it does not offer 5* service. We booked a special offer of "free WiFi".This was acknowledged at check in however, we never received free wi fi to our room and for most of the stay it was not even available in the lobby, where is was advertised as being free for all. When we complained we were advised that the room we booked did not include free wifi. The staff were generally pleasant although it did appear that the management was haphazard. The decor is stark with long corridors with motion activated lighting meaning that you are always entering pitch black corridors which can be disconcerting. The toilet pan was located too close to the wall which would make it very difficult for an overweight person to use and the toilet roll holder was hanging off the wall day 1 to end of holiday. The swimming area is a monumental plain concrete slab with pools set symmetrically. Absolutely unappealing with the starkness of the concrete surface broken only by a myriad of expansion cracks filled with epoxy. The hotel was however, worth the money despite the fact that much more should be expected of a 5* hotel.

Excellent Hotel

This was a super stay ... 7 nights from 21 Oct. Stayed on 7th floor with fabulous ocean view. I would have no hesitation recommending this hotel. It was wonderful .... faultless.
